Claudio Abbado (1933–2014) was a leading Italian conductor, celebrated for his refined interpretations and leadership of major orchestras. Trained at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory, the Chigiana Academy, and the Vienna Academy under Hans Swarowsky, he gained early recognition with the Koussevitzky Prize (1958) and Dimitri Mitropoulos Prize (1963). Abbado served as principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra (1979–88), music director of the Vienna State Opera (1986–91), and principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic (1989–2002), while also working closely with the Vienna Philharmonic and La Scala, Milan. Known for Germanic repertoire and Italian opera, he received the Praemium Imperiale in 2003.
