For the fifth volume of the acclaimed Schubert+ series, pianist Can Cakmur pairs Franz Schubert with Ludwig van Beethoven for the first time. Schubert’s Sonata in A major, D 664 reveals his lyrical, narrative approach to the sonata form, evoking shifting landscapes rather than traditional contrasts. Beethoven is represented by his dramatic 32 Variations in C minor, ranging from tender introspection to fiery intensity, and by influence in Schubert’s late Sonata in C minor, D 958. Written in 1828, it merges Beethoven’s structural power with Schubert’s lyricism, standing as a tribute and a final dialogue between the two masters.

Born in Ankara in 1997, pianist Can Çakmur has studied with leading teachers across Europe, including Grigory Gruzman in Weimar and Diane Andersen in Belgium. A prizewinner of the Scottish International Piano Competition (2017) and the Hamamatsu International Piano Competition (2018), he has also earned numerous international awards since childhood. Çakmur has performed at major venues such as Wigmore Hall, the Berlin Philharmonie, and Suntory Hall, collaborating with leading orchestras including the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and MDR Leipzig. Appointed professor at Trinity Laban in 2022, he launched a 12-album BIS project in 2023 pairing Schubert’s piano works with related repertoire, garnering high critical acclaim.
