Avi Avital’s Song of the Birds explores the musical heritage of Italy, Iberia, and the Black Sea, blending folk traditions, classical compositions, and contemporary sounds. Joined by his ensemble “Between Worlds” and regional guests—Spanish cantaora Marina Heredia, Italian singer Alessia Tondo, and the Georgian Ensemble Rustavi—Avital brings to life works by Béla Bartók, Manuel de Falla, and Fazıl Say. The album moves from Italian tarantella to Andalusian folk songs and Georgian male choirs, celebrating cultural diversity and music’s unifying power. It closes with the Catalan folk song Song of the Birds, a poetic call for peace and shared human memory
Avi Avital (b. 1978), the first mandolin soloist nominated for a classical Grammy, is celebrated for his virtuosity and his role in revitalizing the mandolin repertoire. He has commissioned over 100 works, including concertos by Anna Clyne, Jennifer Higdon, Avner Dorman, David Bruce, and Giovanni Sollima, performed with leading orchestras worldwide. Avital’s 2022/23 season featured international tours, collaborations, and the launch of his “Between Worlds Ensemble” exploring diverse musical traditions. An exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist with six acclaimed albums, he regularly appears at major festivals. Born in Be’er Sheva, Israel, he trained in Jerusalem and Padua, and plays a mandolin by Arik Kerman.
