Jaap ter Linden, renowned cellist and early music specialist, is celebrated for his recordings of Bach’s iconic cello suites, a cornerstone and ultimate challenge for any cellist. Alongside an expanding career as a conductor, he continues to perform actively as an instrumentalist. Ter Linden has collaborated with leading early music figures, including Andrew Manze, Richard Egarr, Emma Kirkby, and Andreas Staier. His interpretations of the suites are recognized for their depth and insight, offering performances that invite repeated listening and reaffirming his reputation as a profound and influential voice in early music performance.
Giuseppe Maria Dall’Abaco (1710–1805), born in Brussels, was a gifted cellist who joined Prince Clemens August of Bavaria’s court orchestra at 19 and became Kapellmeister a decade later. Known for his unruly behavior, he eventually moved to Verona, where he gained respect as a composer and member of the Accademia Filarmonica. Regarded as one of the greatest cellists of his era, his surviving works include 11 Capriccios for solo cello, noted for their expressive Empfindsamer Stil and demanding virtuosity. Modern cellist Francesco Galligioni, a leading Early Music performer, frequently interprets Dall’Abaco’s works in collaboration with prominent ensembles and conductors.
