Claudio Scimone (1934–2018) was an Italian conductor, composer, musicologist, and educator renowned for reviving Baroque and Renaissance works. A pupil of Zecchi, Mitropoulos, and Ferrara, he founded I Solisti Veneti in 1959, leading it to international acclaim through world tours and Salzburg Festival appearances. Scimone combined performance with scholarship, preparing modern editions of Tartini, Vivaldi, and Rossini, and giving premieres of long-forgotten works, including Vivaldi’s Orlando furioso and Salieri’s The Last Judgement. He recorded extensively, conducted major orchestras worldwide, and served as principal conductor of the Gulbenkian Orchestra. A dedicated teacher, he also authored a respected treatise on performance practice.
