Violinist Natalia van der Mersch and pianist Natalia Kovalzon present Edvard Grieg’s three sonatas for violin and piano, offering performances that are both brilliant and dynamic while remaining rooted in interpretative tradition. Their approach highlights the contrasting character of each work, bringing out the distinct language, expressiveness, and individuality of the sonatas, and allowing listeners to rediscover the richness and variety of Grieg’s chamber music.
Natalia van der Mersch, born in Essen, Germany, is a distinguished violinist whose early talent was nurtured by Zakhar Bron at the Lübeck Academy and later by Igor Oistrakh at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels, where she graduated with high honors. Awarded the Parke-Davis Sponsorship and the Aalto Award, she made her orchestral debut performing Dvořák’s Violin Concerto with the Slovenian Philharmonic. Since then, she has performed internationally with ensembles including the Hamburg Philharmonic, Essen Philharmonic, and Orchestre de Chambre National de Toulouse, and at festivals such as Schleswig Holstein and Gstaad. Her recordings range from solo recitals to collaborations with Natalia Kovalzon.
Natalia Kovalzon, pianist and chamber musician, was born in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. She trained in Omsk, at the National Conservatory of Kyrgyzstan with Elena Gavrilova, and in masterclasses with Daniel Blumenthal and Tatevik Mokatsian, earning diplomas in solo performance, pedagogy, accompaniment, and chamber music. She debuted with the Omsk Philharmonic and Riga Chamber Orchestra and collaborates regularly with the Luxembourg Chamber Orchestra. Based in Luxembourg, she is artistic director of Artistes en herbe, supporting young talents, and works with the contemporary ensemble United Instruments of Lucilin. A dedicated chamber musician, she performs widely in Luxembourg, Belgium, and France.
