This programme explores 17th-century musical settings of the Song of Solomon, whose sensual and erotic imagery inspired even the most devout Lutheran composers. At its heart are Andreas Hammerschmidt’s pieces, mostly for soprano or tenor, representing the voices of the lover and the beloved. Around these works unfolds a kind of miniature sacred opera, where passionate dialogues and evocations of love are interwoven with dances and instrumental interludes. The selection also includes music by Johann Vierdanck, Dieterich Buxtehude, Thomas Strutz, and others, offering a rich tapestry of sacred and sensual expression from the Baroque era.
Founded in 2001 by violinist Stéphanie de Failly, Clematis is an ensemble dedicated to rediscovering lesser-known 17th-century repertoire, with a special focus on Italian instrumental music and the evolution of the violin. Their acclaimed recordings include works by Carlo Farina, Giovanni Battista and Tomaso Antonio Vitali, Giovanni Legrenzi, and music from the Mantuan court. Clematis also explores German sacred and instrumental music up to the early works of J.S. Bach. Collaborating with leading vocal soloists such as Mariana Flores and Julie Roset, the ensemble adapts its size to each programme. Directed by de Failly and harpsichordist Brice Sailly, Clematis performs widely across Europe and internationally.
