Tchaikovsky’s Manfred Symphony stands as a unique work in his output—a grand symphony built around a rich literary program. Blending Russian and European influences, it showcases the composer’s psychological insight, theatrical flair, and mastery of orchestral color. The music ranges from airy and lyrical to dark and powerful, depicting the emotional and dramatic evolution of its characters with vivid intensity. Reflecting the mature style of Tchaikovsky’s late period, Manfred remains compelling as a product of 19th-century literary, philosophical, and musical intersections. This album was recorded in celebration of the 185th anniversary of Tchaikovsky’s birth.

Born in 1960 in Balashov, Dmitry Liss studied clarinet, theory, and conducting at the Kharkiv Specialized Music School and Moscow State Conservatory under Dmitry Kitaenko. Since 1995, he has been Chief Conductor of the Ural Philharmonic Orchestra. His career includes posts with the Kuzbass Symphony, Russian-American Youth Orchestra, Russian National Orchestra, and Philharmonie Zuidnederland. Winner of the Lovro Matacic Conducting Competition, Liss has guest-conducted leading orchestras across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Artistic Director of the Eurasia International Music Festival since 2011, he has led the Ural Philharmonic in international tours and over 30 recordings.
