Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 4 (1930) drew heavily on music from his ballet The Prodigal Son and initially received a muted response. Soon after, Prokofiev returned to the Soviet Union and shifted toward a more direct, accessible style in his Fifth and Sixth Symphonies, aiming to satisfy official artistic expectations. However, his work was ultimately banned under Stalin, placing him in a difficult political and creative position. This new LSO Live recording features Gianandrea Noseda conducting the London Symphony Orchestra in the composer’s 1947 revision of the Fourth Symphony—a darker and more conflicted version that, despite its power, was never performed in the USSR during Prokofiev’s lifetime.

Italian conductor Gianandrea Noseda (b. 1964) is acclaimed for his work in both symphonic and operatic repertoire, with a prolific discography. Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra since 2017, he became General Music Director of Opernhaus Zürich in 2021/22, where his tenure includes a new Ring Cycle with Andreas Homoki. He also serves as Principal Guest Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra. Dedicated to fostering young talent, Noseda regularly leads masterclasses, tours with youth orchestras such as the European Union Youth Orchestra, and directs the Tsinandali Festival in Georgia alongside its Pan-Caucasian Youth Orchestra.
