Published in 1729, Tragedie Cristiane by nobleman and poet Annibale Marches (1686–1753) is a groundbreaking collection of ten Italian plays blending classical inspiration with Jesuit theatrical tradition. Drawing influence from Racine, Corneille, and Voltaire, Marches combined literary depth with musical innovation by collaborating with ten distinguished composers of the Neapolitan School. Their strophic arias—often accompanied solely by harpsichord obbligato—showcase each composer’s distinctive style. The collection also includes previously unknown instrumental dances, creating a rich synthesis of drama, poetry, and music that reflects the artistic vitality of early 18th-century Italy.
Founded in 2010, Stile Galante is a Dutch-Italian cultural project dedicated to 18th-century Italian music, with a special focus on vocal repertoire. Combining scholarly research with historically informed performance, the ensemble seeks to revive neglected or misunderstood works of exceptional beauty, encouraging a deeper engagement with authentic musical styles. Through this approach, Stile Galante aims to reconnect audiences and musicians with the genuine aesthetics of the period, free from modern distortions. The ensemble records for Pan Classics and Glossa and is directed by conductor Stefano Aresi.
