Paul Dukas (1865–1935) was a French composer best known for L’Apprenti sorcier (1897). Trained at the Paris Conservatory, he gained early recognition with works such as the overture to Polyeucte (1892) and the Symphony in C Major (1896). Though he published little, he excelled in dramatic, program, and piano music, and became a respected teacher and critic. Major works include the Sonate (1901), Variations, interlude et final on a theme by Rameau (1903), the opera Ariane et Barbe-Bleue (1907), and the ballet La Péri (1912). He later ceased publishing, leaving only two late pieces and destroying many manuscripts before his death.
