Hans Gál, who died in Edinburgh in 1987 at age 97, lived through major personal, cultural, and political upheavals, yet his music shows little trace of these hardships. Instead, it reflects a lasting serenity and a deep connection to his artistic roots in Vienna, whose distinctive atmosphere remains audible even in his late works. The string chamber pieces featured here illustrate this continuity: from the Intermezzi he published at 24 to the radiant String Quintet completed at 86. Across these decades, Gál maintained an unwavering commitment to beauty, revealing a composer whose inner artistic compass remained steady despite the trials of his life.
