Now in his seventh season as Chief Conductor of Hamburg’s NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, Alan Gilbert continues to expand a distinguished series of recordings made in the Elbphilharmonie. A new release, Tempus fugit by Finnish composer Magnus Lindberg, becomes available on December 19 and reflects Gilbert’s strong commitment to contemporary music. Recorded during the 2021 Elbphilharmonie Visions biennial—an online festival held during the pandemic—the album represents the latest addition to Gilbert’s ongoing digital collaboration with the orchestra. The recording is released by OneGate Media and is accessible on all major streaming platforms.
Magnus Lindberg (born 1958) is a leading Finnish composer and pianist known for his innovative orchestral and chamber works. Educated at the Sibelius Academy and further trained in Paris and at major European composition courses, he emerged in the late 1970s with a distinctive, gesture-driven musical language. Early experiments with electronics and musique concrète, notably in works such as Action–Situation–Signification and Kraft, gave way in the 1990s to a stronger harmonic focus in large-scale orchestral compositions including Aura. Lindberg has received numerous international awards and held composer-in-residence posts with major orchestras, including the New York and London Philharmonics.
Alan Gilbert (born 1967) is an American conductor acclaimed for combining contemporary music with the traditional symphonic repertoire and for his strong rapport with audiences. Trained at Harvard University, the Juilliard School, and the Curtis Institute, he held early posts with the Cleveland Orchestra and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, where his adventurous programming gained international recognition. Gilbert served as the 25th music director of the New York Philharmonic from 2009 to 2017, becoming the orchestra’s first native New Yorker in that role. He later assumed the position of Chief Conductor of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, beginning in 2019.
