This compelling interpretation of Arnold Schoenberg’s Violin Concerto, Op. 36 forms a centerpiece of the Berlin Philharmonic’s “Schoenberg Project,” marking the 150th anniversary of the composer’s birth under Chief Conductor Kirill Petrenko. Featuring violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaya, the performance highlights the results of close artistic collaboration between Petrenko and the orchestra. Composed in 1934 during Schoenberg’s early years in American exile and dedicated to Anton Webern, the concerto is renowned for its formidable technical demands, which have limited its programming despite its 1940 premiere by Louis Krasner and the Philadelphia Orchestra under Leopold Stokowski. Here, the work’s perceived austerity gives way to expressive intensity, revealing a chamber-like transparency and emotional depth within its serial framework.

Patricia Kopatchinskaja (born 1977) is a Moldovan-Austrian-Swiss violinist. She studied at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien and the Hochschule der Künste Bern. Kopatchinskaja has played with most of the important European orchestras including Vienna, Berlin and London Philharmonic. She regularly plays in Japan and Australia and recently also extended her activity to the United States, South America, Russia and China. Her regular chamber music partners include Sol Gabetta, Reto Bieri and Joonas Ahonen, among others. She plays a violin made by Giovanni Francesco Pressenda in 1834.
