In 455, the Vandal king Geiseric sacked Rome, giving rise to the enduring concept of “vandalism.” This historical episode later provided imaginative context for Georg Philipp Telemann’s 1722 stage work Sieg der Schönheit (The Victory of Beauty). Premiered on 13 July 1722, the opera showcases Telemann’s theatrical flair and musical ingenuity. A baroque love story culminating in a fourfold happy ending, it navigates intrigue and emotional turbulence through a rich array of musical forms—from captivating arias and intimate expressions to grand choruses and martial brilliance. The work was met with immediate acclaim, and its vibrant celebration of beauty continues to resonate with audiences today.

Michael Hofstetter (born 6 September 1961 in Munich) is a German conductor with an international career spanning more than three decades. He has appeared at leading opera houses and festivals across Europe and North America and has held prominent artistic leadership roles, including General Music Director at Theater Giessen and leadership positions with several chamber orchestras and festivals. Since 2020, he has served as Artistic and Managing Director of the International Gluck Festivals Nuremberg and as First Guest Conductor of the Tölzer Knabenchor. A multiple nominee for Opernwelt’s “Conductor of the Year,” Hofstetter has received prestigious awards and released numerous acclaimed recordings.
