At the borders of mythical Lydia, a dynastic crisis unfolds as Prince Melo rebels against his father, King Haliate, misled by a treacherous adviser into believing he will be disinherited in favor of a usurper. Amid this turmoil, Sosarme, King of Media and betrothed to Princess Elmira, intervenes as a mediator, seeking to quell the conflict and restore peace. Drawing on the conventions of opera seria, Handel masterfully balances Antonio Salvi’s libretto with a richly expressive score, bridging the Lullian tradition and the innovations later associated with Rameau. Under Marco Angioloni’s direction, the Orchestre de l’Opéra Royal delivers a performance of striking vitality and emotional depth.

Laureate of the Royaumont Foundation, the Baroque Academy of Ambronay, and the Cini Foundation in Venice, Marco Angioloni trained in Florence and Paris before specializing in Baroque repertoire at the Centre de musique baroque de Versailles. Since his 2013 stage debut, he has collaborated with leading conductors and performed at major international venues and festivals. His three acclaimed solo albums have received widespread critical praise. In 2023, he began conducting his ensemble Il Groviglio, producing first recordings of Handel’s Poro and the 1731 version of Rinaldo. In 2024, he appeared in major productions across Europe and conducted Sosarme at the Opéra Royal de Versailles.
