The Juvenilia programme highlights the early keyboard works of Johann Sebastian Bach, repertoire that remains rarely performed and recorded despite its artistic significance. These youthful compositions reveal remarkable inventiveness, vitality, and experimentation, while already anticipating the defining traits of Bach’s mature style. The album also includes works by Dietrich Buxtehude, Johann Adam Reincken, and Georg Böhm—composers who played an important role in shaping Bach’s musical development and artistic identity. The programme concludes with two anonymous pieces from the Andreas Bach Buch, presented here in their first-ever recording, further enriching this exploration of Bach’s formative years.

Gabriel Smallwood is an emerging American harpsichordist recognized as one of the most promising talents in early music. A prizewinner at major international competitions in Bruges, Poznań, and Milan, he is acclaimed for his technical brilliance and expressive depth. Originally from South Carolina, he began on piano before discovering the harpsichord at age twelve. Now based in Basel, he performs widely as a soloist and continuo player across Europe and the United States and has collaborated with leading ensembles and artists. An accomplished composer, he has also earned national awards in the U.S. His debut solo album, devoted to early works of Johann Sebastian Bach, will be released in 2026.
