Although Franz Schubert rarely owned a violin, he composed profoundly inward music for the instrument, marked by expressive depth rather than virtuoso display. His violin and piano works, like his piano music, explore a lyrical realm where earthly and transcendent elements converge through dialogue between the instruments. Between 1816 and 1817, Schubert wrote four sonatas that, while influenced by Mozart, transform classical form into floating harmonic spaces rich in melody and emotional nuance. A decade later, the Rondeau brillant and the Fantasy, inspired by violinist Josef Slawjk, unite virtuosity with existential depth. These late works transcend formal boundaries, becoming poetic expressions of farewell, memory, and transcendence.
Ingolf Turban (born 1964) is a German violinist renowned for his virtuosity and wide-ranging repertoire. Born in Munich into a musical family, he studied violin with Gerhart Hetzel and later with Jens Ellermann and Dorothy DeLay. At just 21, he became concertmaster of the Munich Philharmonic under Sergiu Celibidache before embarking on a successful international solo career. Turban has performed in major concert halls worldwide and collaborated with leading conductors. Highly acclaimed for his interpretations of Paganini, he has recorded over 50 albums, founded the chamber orchestra I Virtuosi di Paganini, teaches in Munich, and received the International Classical Music Award in 2021.
Tomoko Sawallisch is an internationally active pianist who has performed widely in Europe and Japan since her German debut with Brahms’s First Piano Concerto. Alongside her solo career, she has developed a strong focus on chamber music, collaborating with distinguished artists such as Stephan Koncz, Emanuel Graf, Ingolf Turban, Markus Wolf, and Wen-Sinn Yang. In 2015, she was named a Steinway Artist, joining a select group of internationally recognized pianists. Living near Munich, she combines concert and teaching activities with her role on the advisory board of the Prof. Wolfgang Sawallisch Foundation and serves as its representative in Japan.
