Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6, the Pathétique, stands as his final and most personal orchestral statement, a work of profound emotional intensity and expressive depth. Moving from a dark, foreboding opening to a deeply introspective and sorrowful conclusion, the symphony explores new, inward possibilities of the symphonic form, without revealing a specific narrative. This recording features the London Symphony Orchestra under Principal Guest Conductor Gianandrea Noseda, whose close affinity with the Russian tradition illuminates the work’s colour, lyricism, and vulnerability. The programme is completed by Mussorgsky’s evocative Prelude to Khovanshchina, depicting dawn breaking over Moscow and adding a further historical and atmospheric dimension.

Italian conductor Gianandrea Noseda (b. 1964) is acclaimed for his work in both symphonic and operatic repertoire, with a prolific discography. Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra since 2017, he became General Music Director of Opernhaus Zürich in 2021/22, where his tenure includes a new Ring Cycle with Andreas Homoki. He also serves as Principal Guest Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra. Dedicated to fostering young talent, Noseda regularly leads masterclasses, tours with youth orchestras such as the European Union Youth Orchestra, and directs the Tsinandali Festival in Georgia alongside its Pan-Caucasian Youth Orchestra.
