_____________________

Bohuslav Martinů (1890–1959) ranks among the leading figures of Czech music alongside Smetana, Dvořák, and Janáček. A prodigious talent, he composed from a young age and later absorbed diverse influences, including French impressionism and baroque traditions, during his time in Paris and beyond. After fleeing wartime Europe for the United States, he eventually returned to Europe, where he spent his final years. Deeply cosmopolitan, Martinů developed a distinctive style blending Czech roots with international elements. Chamber music was central to his output, as reflected in works from 1937–1945, which display vitality, expressive richness, and a synthesis of his varied musical influences.
