The question of whether music can be defined as “female” or “male” is challenged by the life and work of Dora Pejačević. Like many women composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, she faced limited opportunities compared to her male counterparts, though her aristocratic upbringing and supportive family enabled her artistic development. Gradually gaining recognition across the Habsburg Monarchy, she composed in a wide range of genres, including the symphony, traditionally viewed as male-dominated. Critical responses to her work varied, alternately labeling it “feminine” or “masculine,” ultimately underscoring the difficulty of assigning gender to music and affirming her lasting artistic importance.

Ivan Repušić, born in Croatia in 1978, is a prominent conductor currently serving as Chief Conductor of the Munich Radio Orchestra, Principal Guest Conductor of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, and Principal Conductor-designate of the Staatskapelle Weimar. He studied in Zagreb and held key positions with the Croatian National Theatre in Split, Staatsoper Hannover, and Dubrovnik Summer Festival. Internationally, he has conducted at major opera houses including the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Semperoper Dresden, Hamburg State Opera, and Zurich Opera. He has also led renowned orchestras across Europe. Repušić has released acclaimed recordings and taught at the University of Split. His achievements have earned him numerous Croatian cultural awards and an honorary doctorate.
