This album brings together violinist Midori, the Festival Strings Lucerne led by Daniel Dodds, and pianist Özgür Aydin in a program centered on Robert Schumann’s Violin Concerto alongside works for violin and piano by both Robert and Clara Schumann. The recording highlights the deep artistic and personal connection between the two composers, presenting a repertoire shaped by lyrical intimacy, emotional depth, and expressive clarity. Midori emphasizes the human dimension of Schumann’s late music, reflecting themes of struggle, hope, and introspection, while Clara’s music contributes a direct and graceful lyricism. Together, these works create a reflective musical journey that explores longing, resilience, and the enduring power of artistic expression.

Midori, born in Osaka in 1971, is an internationally renowned violinist, educator, and humanitarian. She began studying violin with her mother, Setsu Goto, and gained international attention at age 11 when Zubin Mehta invited her to perform with the New York Philharmonic. Over four decades, she has appeared with leading orchestras worldwide and collaborated with artists such as Leonard Bernstein and Yo-Yo Ma. Midori currently serves on the faculty of the Juilliard School and holds the Dorothy Richard Starling Chair in Violin Studies at the Curtis Institute of Music. Deeply committed to education and social engagement, she has founded several nonprofit organizations promoting accessible music education and serves as a United Nations Messenger of Peace.
