This project explores a brief yet significant 15th-century period marked by efforts to unite Eastern and Western cultures through music. Centered on the works of Guillaume Dufay alongside Byzantine composers Chrysaphes and Plousiadenos, it highlights a rare moment of artistic collaboration across the Mediterranean. Performed by the Ensemble Irini with the addition of medieval sackbuts and trumpets, the recording brings to life a rich fusion of musical traditions born from a shared cultural aspiration. The CD follows the critically acclaimed “Sacred Spring,” which received top honors from Télérama, further underscoring the ensemble’s commitment to reviving historically meaningful and innovative repertoire.
Founded in 2015 in Marseille by Lila Hajosi, Ensemble Irini is an internationally acclaimed vocal group specializing in sacred early music bridging Eastern and Western traditions. Known for its innovative and unconventional approach, the ensemble has developed a distinctive sound characterized by flexible vocal formations and the absence of soprano voices, offering rich reinterpretations of Orthodox and Renaissance repertoire. Its programs, from Maria Nostra to JANUA, foster dialogue between historical traditions and contemporary perspectives. Entering a new phase in 2025–2026, the ensemble expands into ambitious, multidisciplinary projects and collaborations, reinforcing its reputation for artistic boldness, scholarly depth, and expressive performance.
