This recording delves into the devotional music of the laudesi confraternities active in the Venice region around 1500, highlighting their repertoire of Italian sacred songs centered on the Virgin Mary and Christ’s Passion. Rooted in popular religious expression, these works combine homophonic textures with direct emotional appeal, often shaped by influences from Franco-Flemish song traditions. Drawing inspiration from the musicians of the Venetian Scuole Grandi, Le Miroir de Musique reconstruct a distinctive sound world situated between spirituality and emerging humanist thought, offering insight into a vibrant cultural moment where communal devotion and evolving artistic forms closely intersect.
Le Miroir de Musique is a Basel-based ensemble dedicated to the performance of late medieval and Renaissance music, spanning from the troubadour era to the humanist movements of the 16th century. Directed by Baptiste Romain, a specialist in historical string and wind instruments, the group brings together leading young performers, many trained at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. Inspired by Jacques de Liège’s Speculum Musicae, the ensemble seeks to offer vivid and historically informed interpretations grounded in original sources. It has gained international recognition through appearances at major early music festivals and concert series across Europe, reflecting both artistic excellence and scholarly commitment.
