Carl Vine (b. 8 October 1954, Australia) is a prolific and internationally acclaimed composer whose output spans eight symphonies, thirteen concertos, six string quartets, and extensive chamber, choral, and solo works. His music, performed globally and featured on over 70 recordings, encompasses modern art music as well as compositions for film, dance, theatre, and special events, including the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games Closing Ceremony. Vine’s notable works include his Piano Sonata (1990) and Choral Symphony No. 6 (1996), with recordings of his first six symphonies available on ABC Classics. Former Artistic Director of Musica Viva Australia, he has also served as Senior Lecturer in Composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music since 2014, and was appointed Officer of the Order of Australia the same year.
Celebrating their twenty-fifth season in 2020, the Goldner String Quartet is widely regarded as Australia’s leading string quartet and an ensemble of international stature. Founded in 1995 and retaining all original members, the Quartet has performed at prestigious venues including London’s Wigmore Hall, European festivals, and across the USA, Asia, and New Zealand. Renowned for their recordings, notably the complete Beethoven quartets on ABC Classics—which won the 2009 Limelight Award—the Goldners have collaborated extensively with pianist Piers Lane and recorded for Hyperion, Tall Poppies, and Naxos. Committed educators, they mentor emerging ensembles and commission new works from Australia’s leading composers, while maintaining residencies at major festivals and Musica Viva Australia.
Australian pianist Piers Lane, based in London, is renowned for his versatility across solo, chamber, and concerto repertoire. A five-time BBC Proms soloist, he has performed over 100 concertos with leading orchestras and appeared at major festivals worldwide. He collaborates regularly with the Goldner String Quartet, Tasmin Little, and Dame Patricia Routledge, with an extensive discography including Hyperion, Chandos, and ABC Classics. Lane serves as Artistic Director of the Sydney International Piano Competition and has led the Australian Festival of Chamber Music and Myra Hess Day in London. Honours include Officer of the Order of Australia, honorary doctorates, and the Sir Bernard Heinze Award.
