Diego Conti’s recent works for string quartet and quintet can be understood within a broadly postmodern aesthetic framework. Drawing on diverse compositional strategies—from György Ligeti’s complex structures to Luciano Berio’s stylistic plurality and influences from John Adams—his music reflects a departure from linear, progressive traditions in art music since the 1970s. Instead, it embraces a flexible, pluralistic approach to musical language. This recording results from his collaboration with the Chaos String Quartet, formed at the Mozarteum University Salzburg.

Diego Conti (b. 1958) began studying violin at 15 after early discouragement from a teacher. He trained at the “L. D’Annunzio” Conservatory in Pescara and later at the Mozarteum University Salzburg under Sándor Végh. He built an international career as a violinist and concertmaster, collaborating with major orchestras and conductors such as Georg Solti and Zubin Mehta. In 2003, a neurological illness ended his performing career, leading him to focus on composition. His works span chamber, orchestral, film, and theater music, and he also teaches violin at the Rossini Conservatory Pesaro.

Founded in 2019, the Chaos String Quartet draws inspiration from the principles of chaos in art, science, and philosophy. The ensemble has quickly established an international reputation, winning major competitions including ARD (2022), Bordeaux (2022), Bad Tölz (2023), and Haydn (2023), alongside further distinctions at the Bartók World Competition and the Premio VE Rimbotti. They have performed at leading venues such as the Musikverein Wien, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Wigmore Hall, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, and Philharmonie de Paris, and appear regularly at prominent festivals across Europe and beyond. Graduates of the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole, the quartet combines artistic excellence with initiatives aimed at broadening access to the string quartet repertoire.
