The Kölner Akademie, under the direction of Michael Alexander Willens, presents J.S. Bach’s Lutheran Masses BWV 233–236 as a cohesive and compelling body of work. Composed in the 1730s, these Kyrie–Gloria Masses demonstrate Bach’s mastery in reworking earlier cantata material into refined, structurally balanced compositions. Each Mass, comprising six movements, blends choral brilliance with intimate arias while reflecting a deep engagement with the Latin liturgy. Often overshadowed by the Mass in B minor, these works emerge here as significant achievements, showcasing Bach’s inventive transformation techniques, rich orchestration, and the expressive and architectural unity that defines this repertoire.

Michael Alexander Willens (b. 1952) is an American conductor and music director of Die Kölner Akademie. A graduate of the Juilliard School, where he studied with John Nelson, he also trained with Leonard Bernstein at Tanglewood and with Paul Vorwerk in choral conducting. His musical background spans baroque to contemporary, jazz, and pop styles. Willens has led performances across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and the Middle East, earning widespread acclaim. Passionate about rediscovering forgotten repertoire and championing contemporary American composers, he has conducted numerous world premières and released over 40 acclaimed recordings, many recognized with awards and international praise.
