Many composers reused musical material across different works, adapting it to the specific instruments or voices intended. For example, the Sonata BWV 1027 for viola da gamba and harpsichord was originally conceived for two flutes and basso continuo (BWV 1039), while BWV 1028 and 1029 were written for viola da gamba and harpsichord, and BWV 582 for organ. In these transcriptions, the shoulder cello assumes the viola da gamba part, the transverse flute plays the keyboard’s right-hand line, and the bass provides harmonic and contrapuntal support. Similarly, in Fantasia BWV 904, the pianoforte preserves the original keyboard lines while revealing new colors and articulations, exemplifying the art of faithful yet expressive transcription.
