Joseph Haydn composed an extensive series of baryton trios in response to the enthusiasm of Nikolaus I, Prince Esterházy for the unusual instrument. The baryton, similar to a viola d’amore, features additional sympathetic strings that can also be plucked, enriching its tonal palette. This album presents six refined and intimate works that demonstrate Haydn’s creativity and adaptability, reflecting the prince’s growing mastery of the instrument. Together, these pieces highlight both the instrument’s unique character and Haydn’s inventive approach within this specialized genre.

Valencia Baryton Project is an international collective based in Valencia, Spain, dedicated to performing the extensive baryton repertoire of Joseph Haydn alongside works by other composers. Centered on the traditional baryton trio—baryton, viola, and cello—the ensemble is led by Matthew Baker, one of the few specialists of the instrument. The group has gained international recognition through acclaimed performances across Europe and the Americas, as well as features in major publications. In addition to performance, it promotes education and contemporary composition, collaborating with modern composers to expand the baryton’s repertoire and reintroduce this rare instrument to today’s audiences.
