This recording, made at the Basilica in Assisi, presents a comprehensive collection of “Rhymed Offices” dedicated to St Francis of Assisi and St Antony of Padua, liturgical texts traditionally chanted during key Hours such as Vespers, Matins, and Lauds. Originating in the Middle Ages, these poetic compositions were designed to connect biblical texts with the lives and virtues of saints. The Offices are attributed to Brother Julian of Speyer, a 13th-century Franciscan monk and poet who likely drew on early biographies of St Francis, while composing original works for St Antony. His music reflects a stylistic shift from traditional Gregorian chant toward emerging polyphonic influences.

Julian of Speyer, also known as Julianus Teutonicus, was a distinguished 13th-century composer, poet, and historian, born in Speyer and active primarily in Paris until his death around 1250. Educated at the University of Paris, he served as musical director of the royal chapel under Philip Augustus and Louis VIII before joining the Franciscan Order. He later held key roles within the order, including choir-master. Julian is best known for composing the rhymed Offices of St Francis of Assisi and St Antony of Padua, celebrated for their poetic refinement and musical innovation. Widely influential in the Middle Ages, his works exemplify the height of liturgical narrative composition.

The Nova Schola Gregoriana is an ensemble dedicated to the study and performance of Gregorian chant, drawing on decades of scholarly research by leading specialists such as Dom Eugène Cardine, Dom Jean Claire, Luigi Agustoni, and Alberto Turco. Active for approximately forty years, the group has achieved international recognition through performances at major festivals and concerts across Europe, as well as tours in Japan and the United States. It has participated in significant events, including centenary and international congresses on Gregorian chant and notable cultural celebrations. In 1987, the ensemble received the prestigious Golden Orpheus award from the Académie Nationale du Disque Lyrique.
