Max Meyer-Olbersleben (1850–1920), born in Olbersleben, Thuringia, studied under Franz Liszt at the Weimar Orchestral School and later with Gabriel Josef Rheinberger and Peter Cornelius in Munich. He established his career in Würzburg as a professor of counterpoint and composition and served as director of the Royal Conservatory of Music until retirement. Over his lifetime, 114 works were published, mainly choral pieces, songs, and piano music. His training exposed him to both traditional and emerging German musical languages, and the chamber music recorded here for the first time reflects his deep Romantic sensibility and the creative spirit of a new musical awakening.
