Wolfgang Sawallisch (1923–2013) was a distinguished German conductor and pianist whose career spanned major international opera houses and orchestras. Trained in Munich, he began his career after World War II and quickly rose to prominence, holding leading posts in Aachen, Hamburg, and Munich, and conducting at festivals such as Bayreuth Festival. He later served as Music Director of The Philadelphia Orchestra. Renowned for interpretations of German repertoire, he recorded extensively, earning major awards for works by Strauss, Wagner, and Brahms, and collaborated with many of the era’s leading musicians.
