This Fantasy Records release features the Dessoff Choirs, conducted by Paul Boepple, in a refined program of Renaissance polyphony. The album highlights four sacred compositions by Tomás Luis de Victoria, including the luminous O magnum mysterium and the deeply expressive six-voice Missa pro defunctis. Emphasizing historical authenticity, the recording presents Spanish sacred music with careful scholarly attention. It is further enriched by detailed program notes written by Boepple, reflecting the label’s commitment to both musical excellence and historical context.

Tomás Luis de Victoria (c. 1548–1611) was a leading Spanish Renaissance composer, ranked alongside Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and Orlando di Lasso. Trained in Rome under royal patronage, he later served as a priest, organist, and chaplain, notably in Madrid. His output includes masses, motets, and sacred works such as his renowned Requiem (1605). Victoria’s music blends Palestrina’s contrapuntal mastery with intense emotional expression and Spanish mysticism, often linked to Teresa of Ávila. His innovative harmonic contrasts and dramatic style foreshadow elements of the Baroque era.

The Dessoff Choirs, led by music director Malcolm J. Merriweather, is a prominent New York–based chorus founded in 1924. Renowned for innovative programming, it performs choral works spanning the Renaissance to contemporary music, with a focus on rarely heard and new compositions. The ensemble presents its own concerts and collaborates with major orchestras, while maintaining multiple formations, including symphonic and chamber groups. As a self-governing organization, members actively support operations. Dessoff also promotes community engagement and education, notably through its Singing Scholar Program for New York City public high school students.
