Spanish saxophonist Carlos Gimenez presents a poetic programme that reimagines major vocal and vocal-inspired works as “songs without words,” highlighting the saxophone’s lyrical and expressive potential. Together with pianist José Alberto del Cerro, he interprets music by Federico Mompou, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Xavier Montsalvatge, Richard Wagner, and Fernando Obradors. The programme emphasizes the saxophone’s ability to breathe, sigh, and sing with striking emotional immediacy, transforming vocal masterpieces into luminous instrumental reflections that reveal a hidden, human vocal quality within the instrument’s sound.
Carlos Gimenez, born in 1993 in Benimodo (Valencia), is a Spanish classical saxophonist trained at leading European conservatoires, including the Conservatorium van Amsterdam under Arno Bornkamp and the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin under Johannes Ernst. He has developed a career focused on expanding the saxophone’s role in classical music through collaboration with contemporary composers and diverse ensemble formats, including chamber and choral settings. As an orchestral musician, he has performed with major ensembles such as the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Staatskapelle Berlin, and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony. Since 2023, he has been soprano saxophonist of the Clair Obscur Saxophonquartett, while also maintaining an active profile as a teacher, guest professor, and masterclass leader across Europe.
José Alberto del Cerro, born 1994 in Albacete, is a Spanish pianist and chamber musician who began his musical training with Gloria Munuera and later studied with Dra Pilar Valero in Murcia, graduating with honours. He has also undertaken conducting studies with Andrés Salado and Miguel Romea. An award-winning performer, he has received recognition at competitions including the Clamo Music Competition, the International Berlin Mozart Competition, and Juventudes Musicales de Cataluña. As a chamber musician, he won second prize at the VII Alzira National Chamber Music Competition as part of the Jamse Duo and performs with the Mylö Trio. His concert experience spans works by composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, and Gershwin, with performances across Europe and recordings for Murcia TV. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam under David Kuyken.
