The Europäisches Hanse-Ensemble, under the direction of its musical guide Manfred Cordes, presents a program rooted in the rich musical heritage of the 17th-century Hanseatic world, spanning cities such as Stralsund, Gdańsk, Magdeburg, and Hamburg. Recorded in the New Church of Örgryte in Gothenburg, the performance features the world’s largest meantone-tuned organ as a distinctive sonic centerpiece. The repertoire highlights prominent Baroque composers such as Michael Praetorius, Matthias Weckmann, and Johann Selle, reflecting the opulence and cultural reach of early Northern European musical life. The project emphasizes historically informed performance within a resonant architectural and acoustic setting.

Manfred Cordes (b. 1953) is a specialist in 16th- and 17th-century music, bridging musicology and performance. He studied music, classical philology, and vocal pedagogy in Hannover and Berlin, performing with Early Music ensembles as a singer and instrumentalist. In 1993, he founded Weser Renaissance Bremen, an acclaimed ensemble with over 50 recordings focused on music from 1500 to 1700. Cordes earned his doctorate in Renaissance music theory and became a professor and later principal at the Hochschule für Künste Bremen. He also founded the European Hanseatic Ensemble, combining his passion for North German music, Hanseatic history, and training young musicians.
