Johann Joachim Quantz (1697–1773) was a prominent 18th-century composer, flute virtuoso, instrument maker, and influential music theorist. Rising from modest origins, he became closely associated with Frederick the Great, serving as court composer and flute teacher at the Potsdam court for more than three decades. Quantz wrote extensively for the flute, producing a large body of sonatas and instructional works that shaped performance practice of his time. He also contributed to flute design, advocating for an instrument capable of a warm, vocal-like tone resembling the human voice. This recording of his flute sonatas highlights historically informed performance practices using period instruments, aiming to reflect the expressive qualities and tonal ideals central to Quantz’s musical vision.

Benedek Csalog is an internationally recognized baroque flutist and educator born in Budapest, Hungary. He studied modern flute at the Franz Liszt Conservatory in Budapest before specializing in baroque flute at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague under Barthold Kuijken, a leading figure in historically informed performance. Csalog has performed widely across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and the Middle East, appearing at major early music festivals and earning top prizes at competitions in Orlando and Bruges. He has held teaching positions at institutions such as the Leipzig Hochschule für Musik und Theater and the Bydgoszcz Academy of Music, and has been a frequent guest professor and masterclass teacher internationally. Alongside his performing and teaching career, he has recorded extensively, producing a substantial discography dedicated to early music performance practice.
