Heartlands presents a curated dialogue between German Romanticism and Ukrainian musical identity through works by Johannes Brahms, Robert Schumann, and Mykola Lysenko. Interpreted by prize-winning pianist Dmytro Choni, the programme reflects a synthesis of introspection, emotional intensity, and national musical character. Drawing on Lysenko’s role as a foundational figure in Ukrainian composition and a collector of folk traditions, the album situates Romantic-era German repertoire alongside Ukrainian cultural expression, creating a reflective cross-cultural narrative. Choni, laureate of major international competitions including Leeds and Van Cliburn, emphasizes the emotional and cultural “heartlands” that shape musical identity, reorienting the listener toward a broader, more interconnected view of the Romantic tradition.
Dmytro Choni is an internationally acclaimed pianist born in Kyiv in 1993, recognized for his technical mastery and expressive versatility. Trained in Kyiv and Graz under teachers including Milana Chernyavska and Gabriela Montero, he has earned major competition successes, notably at the Leeds International Piano Competition and the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.
