This new GENUIN release uncovers a forgotten chapter of music history, featuring songs by six Jewish composers born between 1890 and 1924 whose lives were profoundly disrupted by Nazi persecution and exile. Performed by mezzo-soprano Pia Viola Buchert and pianist Tatjana Dravenau, the album showcases the resilient creativity of Walter Arlen, Ursula Mamlok, Hans Gál, Ruth Schonthal, Felix Wolfes, and Viktor Ullmann. Würzburg-born mezzo-soprano Pia Viola Buchert completed her elite vocal training at prestigious German institutions, including the Detmold University of Music and the Bayerische Theaterakademie August Everding. Renowned for her commitment to chamber music and art song, she performs regularly with pianist Tatjana Dravenau and harpist Jenny Meyer at major venues like the Philharmonie Essen. Furthermore, Buchert is a sought-after soloist in both Early and New Music, appearing frequently at notable festivals and collaborating with leading orchestras, including the Munich Radio Orchestra. Her diverse concert and operatic career is extensively documented through numerous acclaimed recordings and radio broadcasts.
Pianist Tatjana Dravenau completed her advanced solo and accompaniment studies with distinction at institutions including the Folkwang-Hochschule, the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich, where she is also pursuing doctoral research. Highly decorated, she has received prestigious awards from the German Schubert Society and the John Ireland Society. Renowned as an accomplished collaborative artist, Dravenau serves as the official accompanist for the International Robert Schumann Competition. Her career centers on developing thematic concert programs combining song, solo piano, and literature, resulting in regular performances at major European venues with distinguished vocalists and narrators.
