On the album The Revolutionary Oboe, oboist Christopher Palameta and the Notturna ensemble revive a brilliant, underappreciated chamber repertoire from the late eighteenth century. Featuring works by Mozart, Boccherini, and Gluck, the project explores the historical metamorphosis of the oboe as a prominent, expressive solo voice in Parisian salons. Played on a rare, original instrument crafted around 1785 by Christophe Delusse, the performance leverages historically informed practices to highlight the instrument's luminous tone and technical virtuosity. Including several world-premiere recordings, the album successfully restores an obscure facet of French musical history to contemporary prominence.
Founded in 2006 by oboist Christopher Palameta, Notturna is a distinguished chamber collective celebrated for its spirited, sensitive performances that leverage the transparency and expressiveness of early wind instruments. The ensemble specializes in researching and executing largely unexplored historical repertoires, introducing vivid and dynamic programming to audiences across North America, South America, and Europe. Notturna’s critically acclaimed discography features six world-premiere recordings for the ATMA Classique label, alongside a collection of forgotten Prussian court chamber works. Their uncompromising depth and historically informed zeal continue to earn unanimous praise from the international musical press.
