For her solo debut with BIS Records, violinist Alina Ibragimova partners with pianist Cédric Tiberghien to launch a complete cycle of Beethoven’s violin sonatas on period instruments. Utilizing a gut-stringed violin and a copy of a 1794 Viennese fortepiano, the duo authentically recreates the turn-of-the-19th-century soundscape. This initial volume features the three early Opus 12 sonatas alongside the celebrated, deeply poetic "Spring" Sonata. By performing these works as true equal partnerships rather than simple keyboard accompaniments, Ibragimova and Tiberghien deliver a historically informed interpretation that establishes a compelling foundation for this landmark recording series.
Born in Russia in 1985, violinist Alina Ibragimova studied at the Moscow Gnesin School, Yehudi Menuhin School, and the Royal College of Music. A BBC New Generation Artists alumna, her accolades include two Royal Philharmonic Society awards and an MBE. Her extensive orchestral engagements feature performances with the London Philharmonic and Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, alongside play-directing ensembles like the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. An avid recitalist and founding member of the period-instrument Chiaroscuro Quartet, she frequently collaborates with pianist Cédric Tiberghien. Ibragimova’s award-winning Hyperion discography includes a Gramophone Award-winning Shostakovich album. She performs on a c.1775 Anselmo Bellosio violin.
Born in 1975, French pianist Cédric Tiberghien has established a distinguished international career celebrated for his versatile programming, innovative concert formats, and premier chamber partnerships. Renowned for his interpretations of Classical, French, and contemporary repertoire, his notable projects include a multi-season Beethoven variations cycle at Wigmore Hall and an acclaimed, multi-media John Cage collaboration. Tiberghien frequently performs with elite global orchestras, including the Berliner Philharmoniker and San Francisco Symphony. A dedicated chamber musician, he regularly collaborates with baritone Stéphane Degout and maintains a celebrated, period-instrument duo partnership with violinist Alina Ibragimova.
