Notes from the Undergrowth is the debut album of pianist Hannah Watson Emmrich, conceptually designed as an sonic ecosystem of musical miniatures depicting a forest cycle. The repertoire juxtaposes canonical works by Schumann and Ravel with obscure pieces and new commissions. Eschewing broad landscape tropes, Emmrich selectively curates compositions that highlight individual species, subtle natural phenomena, and captivating structural irregularities. Enhanced by intimate engineering that mirrors the vivid detail of macro nature photography, the album showcases Emmrich's profound rapport with piano sonority, delivering a vibrant, highly detailed, and emotionally evocative listening experience.
