Commemorating the 400th anniversary of Orlando Gibbons’s passing, harpsichordist Friederike Chylek’s recital program offers a comprehensive exploration of English keyboard music through the works of Gibbons, William Byrd, and John Bull. The collection illustrates a critical evolutionary trajectory: Byrd’s vocal-inspired counterpoint and Bull’s pioneering virtuosity culminate in Gibbons’s sophisticated synthesis of both styles. Rather than framing Gibbons merely as the conclusion of an era, the recording highlights his role as an innovator who expanded the instrument's potential. Ultimately, this program serves as both an accessible entry point for newcomers and a valuable overview for established enthusiasts of the repertoire.
Friederike Chylek is a highly acclaimed harpsichordist and a recognized specialist in early English keyboard music, particularly the Renaissance works of William Byrd. Over the past decade, she has released four critically praised solo albums on the Oehms Classics label, earning features on prominent broadcasts like BBC Radio 3. Renowned for balancing emotional expressiveness with technical clarity, Chylek has performed at prestigious international venues and festivals, including the Byrd 400 Festival. Beyond her solo career, she is an active chamber musician, orchestral collaborator, and church musician. Her foundational expertise is backed by advanced studies at the prestigious Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.
