(un)common thread is a new recording by award-winning violinist Ariana Kim that examines improvisation across Western classical, folk, and global musical traditions. The album pairs sonatas by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven, performed on period instruments, with original works, traditional folk music, and collaborative compositions. Drawing inspiration from South Indian Carnatic music, Balkan folk traditions, and contemporary cross-cultural influences, Kim and her collaborators explore spontaneity, ornamentation, rhythm, and creative expression. The project highlights improvisation as a unifying musical language, demonstrating connections between diverse genres while reimagining historical and modern performance practices.

A tenured professor at Cornell University, Kim has earned major honors with the Aizuri Quartet, including the Osaka International Competition Grand Prize, the M-Prize, and a Grammy nomination.
