Reference Recordings has released a live audiophile album featuring Manfred Honeck conducting the world-renowned Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra at Heinz Hall. Recorded in February 2025, the release pairs Honeck's masterly, scholarly interpretation of Antonin Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 "From the New World" with the premiere commercial recording of Carlos Simon’s Four Black American Dances. Simon, an acclaimed, genre-blending composer, currently serves with both the National and Boston Symphony Orchestras. Marking the seventeenth installment in the multi-GRAMMY®-winning Pittsburgh Live! series, the album was produced by the elite team at Soundmirror, continuing the orchestra's historic legacy of exceptional recorded performances.
Manfred Honeck (b. 1958, Austria) studied at the Vienna Academy of Music and gained formative experience with the Vienna Philharmonic and Vienna State Opera Orchestra. A former assistant to Claudio Abbado, he later worked at Zurich Opera House, where he won the European Conductor’s Award, before holding posts with the MDR Symphony, Oslo Philharmonic, Swedish Radio Symphony, Czech Philharmonic, and Staatsoper Stuttgart. Since 2008, he has been Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, earning Grammy® acclaim and international recognition. Honeck is also in high demand as a guest conductor, leading top ensembles such as the Berlin Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw, and major American orchestras.
