Founded in Pavia in 2008 by Maurizio Schiavo, Il Demetrio is a premier Italian period-instrument ensemble dedicated to rediscovering and promoting the region's rich musical heritage. The group takes its name from Bohemian composer Josef Mysliveček’s 1773 opera Il Demetrio, which originally inaugurated the city's historic Teatro Fraschini. Specializing in modern premieres of forgotten works, the ensemble has brought numerous significant regional compositions back to light. Its notable revivals include Mysliveček’s namesake opera, film scores by Franco Vittadini, sacred orchestral works by Alessandro Rolla, and Holy Week choral pieces by Antonio Cagnoni, establishing the group as a vital force in early music revival.
