Franz Krommer (1759–1831) succeeded Czech compatriot Leopold Koželuch as court composer to the Habsburg emperors in Vienna, producing an expansive catalog that excelled in wind music, string quartets, concertos, and published symphonies. Conducted by Marek Štilec using archived-corrected parts, this recording highlights Krommer’s First and Second Symphonies alongside his Concertino. The symphonies showcase his increasingly adventurous musical language through vigorous energy, fulsome structures, and graceful trios. Complementing these works, the attractive Concertino functions as an expressive divertimento, shifting dynamically through various engaging moods to showcase the composer's stylistic depth and refinement.

Born in Prague in 1985, conductor Marek Štilec studied violin and conducting before founding the Quattro Chamber Orchestra at age 17. Following mentorship from Michael Tilson Thomas, Štilec gained international acclaim through his prolific recording relationship with Naxos, beginning with a landmark five-CD cycle of Zdeněk Fibich’s orchestral works with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra. He has since conducted prominent European ensembles—including the Prague Philharmonic, Ulster Orchestra, and Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra—while establishing a reputation for resurrecting rare Czech classical repertoire, leading acclaimed multi-volume recording cycles of works by Leopold Koželuch, Vítězslav Novák, and Paul Wranitzky.
