This album showcases the depth of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century British choral music through major works by Hubert Parry and Edward Elgar. At the core is Parry’s monumental De Profundis, a setting of Psalm 130 celebrated for its contrapuntal mastery and emotional arc from penitence to hope, alongside his majestic anthem God Is Our Hope and Strength. In contrast, Elgar’s contributions highlight his lyrical versatility, featuring the delicate partsong The Snow and the charming Scenes from the Bavarian Highlands, a work inspired by Alpine folklore. Together, these compositions balance grand spiritual assurance with intimate personal expression.
Distinguished British conductor David Temple is the Musical Director of both the Crouch End Festival Chorus, which he co-founded in 1984, and the Hertfordshire Chorus. After beginning his career singing under legendary conductors in the London Philharmonic Choir, he built a versatile trajectory spanning classical masterpieces, major film soundtracks like Prince Caspian, and high-profile pop-rock collaborations with artists such as Ray Davies, Oasis, and Hans Zimmer. Temple has prepared choirs for top international maestros and performed across Britain’s premier venues and music festivals, earning his MBE in 2018 for outstanding services to music.
Under Musical Director David Temple, the Hertfordshire Chorus has established itself as one of the UK’s premier symphonic choruses, celebrated for passionate performances spanning classical masterpieces, jazz, video game scores, and rock. Regularly appearing at major national venues, the ensemble frequently collaborates with top orchestras and conductors, with notable projects including War Horse – The Story in Concert and the Game Music Festival. Alongside an extensive discography and frequent television and radio broadcasts, the chorus actively advances the art form through a dedicated commissioning fund for emerging composers and extensive outreach programs inspiring the next generation of singers.
