This album highlights three landmark orchestral works by British composer John McCabe spanning nearly four decades of his creative career. Symphony No. 2 presents a tightly woven, single-movement structure marked by vibrant rhythmic drive, brilliant orchestration, and clear architecture. Symphony No. 3, Hommages, reflects his deep admiration for Haydn and Nielsen by integrating thematic allusions into a dynamic, tonal canvas. Completing the collection, the Cello Concerto Songline offers a continuous, expressive musical journey that balances virtuoso solo passages with delicate orchestral textures and introspective lyricism. Together, these pieces showcase the depth, structural clarity, and evolution of McCabe's distinctive symphonic voice.

Born near Liverpool to an artistic, multicultural family, John McCabe (1939–2015) was a celebrated British composer, pianist, and author. After studying in Manchester and Munich, he built a distinguished dual career, achieving early fame with his landmark, complete Decca recording of Haydn's piano sonatas. His vast compositional catalogue spans every major genre, featuring acclaimed ballets such as Edward II and Arthur, seven symphonies, brass band classics, and numerous concertos. Honored with a CBE, the ISM Distinguished Musician Award, and an Ivor Novello Award, McCabe left an enduring legacy as a champion of British music through his prolific performances, extensive discography, and creative output.
