Under the artistic direction of Reinhard Goebel, the Neues Bachisches Collegium Musicum launches The Leipzig Collegium Musicum Vol. 1: Music before Bach, capturing Leipzig’s dynamic early eighteenth-century musical landscape. Active in the city’s student-led Collegia Musica, composers like Telemann, Fasch, Graupner, and Heinichen defined this pre-Bach era. Goebel's curated program features world-premiere recordings of works by Beer, Heinichen, and Hoffmann, alongside compositions by Fasch, Graupner, and Telemann, highlighting recorder soloist Max Volbers and Gewandhausorchester principal horn Clemens Röger. Founded in 1979 by Gewandhausorchester musicians, the acclaimed ensemble honors Leipzig’s historical lineage, which ultimately laid the foundation for the Gewandhausorchester itself.

Founded in 1979 by Max Pommer and Walter Heinz Bernstein, the Neues Bachisches Collegium Musicum (NBCM) consists of Gewandhausorchester members who apply historical performance research using modern instruments. Named in homage to the 18th-century ensemble led by Telemann and Bach, the NBCM earned early international acclaim, including the 1985 Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik for Bach's Brandenburg Concertos. Over the decades, leadership passed to Burkhard Glaetzner, Albrecht Winter—who famously reconstructed historical Gewandhaus concert programs—and later guest conductors. Partnering with local institutions, the ensemble regularly presents specialized Baroque concert series, honoring Leipzig's rich musical heritage.

Reinhard Goebel (born 1952) is a German conductor and violinist renowned for his work in early music and historically informed performance. He founded Musica Antiqua Köln in 1973 and led it until 2007, establishing it as a leading ensemble in the field. Goebel studied violin with prominent teachers across Europe and developed expertise in both modern and baroque styles. He has played a significant role in reviving neglected repertoire, including works by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, Johann David Heinichen, and Jan Dismas Zelenka. Since 2018, he has directed the Berlin Baroque Soloists and has also served as a professor in Salzburg.
