A legendary figure among British trumpeters, John Wilbraham served as principal trumpet for both the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra while establishing himself as a distinguished educator. A frequent collaborator of conductor Sir Neville Marriner, Wilbraham formed a close artistic partnership that defined a golden era of classical brass playing. Born in Bournemouth in 1944, renowned British trumpeter John Wilbraham studied at the Royal Academy of Music, where he earned the Worshipful Company of Musicians' Silver Medal, and under Maurice André. Following his 1966 debut with the New Philharmonia Orchestra, he held principal roles with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, and Philharmonia Orchestra. Celebrated for his piccolo trumpet expertise in Baroque repertoire and twentieth-century works, Wilbraham regularly recorded with the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields and the English Chamber Orchestra. Also a distinguished educator, he taught at top institutions like the RAM before his passing in April 1998.
